Introduction:
Methanol (CH3OH), also called methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, or wood spirit, the simplest of a long series of organic compounds called alcohols, consisting of a methyl group (CH3) linked with a hydroxy group (OH). Methanol was formerly produced by the destructive distillation of wood. The modern method of preparing methanol is based on the direct combination of carbon monoxide gas and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst.
Uses:
Methanol is widely used in the production of acetic acid and formaldehyde.
In order to discourage the recreational consumption of ethanol, methanol is often added to it as a denaturant.
This compound is also used as an antifreeze (an additive that is used to lower the freezing point of a liquid) in many pipelines.
It is also used in sewage treatment plants since it serves as a carbon-based food source for denitrifying bacteria. The polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique involves the use of methanol as a destaining agent.
Methanol Poisoning:
Methanol toxicity is poisoning from methanol characteristically via ingestion.
Symptoms may include a decreased level of consciousness, poor or no coordination, vomiting, abdominal pain and a specific smell on the breath.
Decreased vision may start as early as twelve hours after exposure
Methanol poisoning most commonly occurs following the drinking of windshield washer fluid
This may be accidental or as part of an attempted suicide
Toxicity may also rarely occur through extensive skin exposure or breathing in fumes.
Methanol Hazards:
When handling methanol including biofuels, it is best to avoid direct exposure as much as possible
It is imperative that safety gear be worn especially those that cover the face, eyes and skin
If working where methanol vapors are present, proper ventilation is imperative for safety
If a methanol spill occurs, stop or reduce the discharge of the methanol (if it can be done without risk) and immediately call your local fire department
Try to isolate the spill/leak area in at least 330 to 660 feet in all directions.
Remove and eliminate all sources of potential ignition and stay upwind.
Do not touch or walk through any spillage and prevent the spilled methanol from entering into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas.
